#YourRatesAtWork

3rd August 2017

There is something special about every place in Australia.

#YourRatesAtWork

Councils are about more than roads and rubbish collection.

They’re responsible for delivering hundreds of services and facilities that contribute to building strong and vibrant communities – everything from dog parks, footy ovals and libraries through to recycling, stormwater drainage, men’s sheds, footpaths and playgrounds.

State and Territory Local Government Associations (linked below) initiated 'Local Government Twitter Day' in Australia to help Councils reflect those special attributes of towns, suburbs and places across the nation and the support Councils provide on a daily basis to care for communities.

On August 1st, councils, stakeholders and communities will light up Twitter to showcase the important and diverse work of local government across Australia using the hashtag #YourRatesAtWork.

By including #YourRatesAtWork in council social media posts we will be able to actively demonstrate what makes "your council part of every day".

Councils under the direction of community elected representatives (councillors) can and do contribute to making a community unique.

What is Local Government Twitter Day?

Following the successful trial of national Local Government Twitter Day in 2014, State and Territory Local Government Associations and the ALGA agreed to run it on an annual basis.

In 2014, national LG Twitter Day recorded about 2,100 tweets using the hashtag, with more than 500 separate twitter users participating nationwide, and 950 retweets. At its peak, 13 tweets a minute used the hashtag.

State & Territory Local Government Associations also have various tools to assist on their web pages including some with maps or search functions into which suburbs, towns or individual addresses can be placed. Some Mobile Apps also have functions which identify which Council area the device is in.
