Local Government Elections
Councils are part of the democratic framework of Australia. The community elects their Council Members every four years and the next general elections happen in 2018. With nearly 360,000 people voting in 2014, Council elections are the biggest single voluntary civic participation activity in the State. Under the Local Government (Elections) Act, the Electoral Commissioner of SA (ECSA) is the returning officer for all Council elections. Find ECSA information here: ECSA.

2014 Election Campaigns
Councils and the Electoral Commission of SA have legislated responsibility to promote elections. The LGA is responsible for publishing a candidates website and in addition it works in liaison with ECSA to support Councils and undertake complementary promotion. In particular the LGA plays a significant role in promoting nominations. 2014 saw a record number of candidates in contests and of female nominations.
