Engineering & Technical Services
What do Council Engineers do? Many are civil or environmental engineers, but there are also many engineering drafters and other technical people who make up an engineering team. As an engineer with Local Government, you will enjoy a number of unique challenges, including:
- Planning and strategising using engineering and economic principles
- Designing and developing civil engineering projects such as hydraulic systems, roads, airports, water supply systems, bridges and buildings. Undertaking engineering computation and analysis. Applying design concepts, and preparing specifications and estimates
- Studying, evaluating and reporting on the environmental implications of projects
- Determining construction methods, materials and quality standards
- Drafting and interpreting specifications, drawings, plans, construction methods and procedures.
- Organising and supervising construction of community infrastructure, managing community relations and administering contracts and verifying and certifying satisfactory completion
- Working with the community to identify needs and opportunities, and developing levels of service.
- Managing people and projects and controlling finances. Achieving the highest levels of corporate management
- Building roads, drains, water and sewerage, buildings, cycle ways and skate parks
- Design and maintenance of parks and gardens
- Planning the creation of new residential estates
- Building new bridges over railway lines or rivers
- Improving traffic flow and safety
- Organising roundabouts, islands and traffic lights at busy intersections
- Planning new children's playgrounds
- Providing new sporting facilities, such as sports fields, gyms and pools
- Designing environmentally friendly recycling facilities
- Developing sea/beach environmental programs
- Managing rainwater runoff
- Managing the Council's fleet of heavy vehicles, such as graders, loaders and trucks, and the light fleet of utilities, vans and cars
- Keeping council's infrastructure in good condition for the community of the future
- Stores management
- Planning and spatial data collection, validation and maintenance
- Designing spatial data storage systems
Qualifications
