On Thursday 6 and Friday 7 over 300 representatives from Councils across South Australia gathered at the LGA's Annual Conference in Adelaide.
This year's conference had a Showcasing Local Government theme, where delegates could find out about the innovative practices, projects and policies that Councils are continuously improving.
We have included synopses of all the presentations, and where possible (due to size limitations) the powerpoint presentations.
Program
The Showcase is an interactive experience which combines a concurrent speaking program and an exhibition of Council and sponsor displays.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The LGA is again providing you with an opportunity to gather together with your peers to find out about innovative things that are happening in Local Government in our own State.
The idea of Showcasing SA Councils was first raised in early 2001, with the first Showcase held later that year.
The format was again followed in 2003 to even greater success, and the feedback received from attendees has been very positive and supports the continuation of this biennial format to the LGA Conference.
In recent years Local Government has been the focus of much community debate - with Council rates decisions making front page headlines - the increased scrutiny around budget decisions; and two inquiries into the financial sustainability of the sector (Federal Government's Fair Share Report and the LGA's own independent inquiry).
The October event will be timely to consider how Councils are responding to these pressures, and these issues will be pivotal to the Showcase Program.
But like Councils' constant balancing act to manage their fiscal responsibilities with the community's social, environmental and economic needs, the program that the LGA is finalising for the Showcase will balance these big issues, with examples of day-to-day processes and practices that Councils use to keep communities functioning.
We will again have an exhibition of Council displays visually highlighting their projects and innovations.
Based on the feedback from the event in 2001 and the success of 2003,we will be encouraging Councils to send senior management and team leader staff as well as CEOs and Council Members. In addition we will be seeking to involve Members of Parliament, senior public servants and the media to increase their exposure to the diversity of Council activities.
I hope you will join with me in finding out about all the exciting things that are happening in our sector, things we and our communities often take for granted.
Cr John Legoe
President
