The Association proceeded with the production of their first Strategic Plan for the period 2005 to 2008 in 2005 with a February review undertaken each year.
With the period 2005-2008 becoming history, Delegates revised and added to the previous Plans in February, 2008 and subsequently produced a new Strategic Plan for 2008-2011. This Plan was aligned, where applicable, with the SA State Strategic Plan, along with contributions to the outcomes required in the State Plan.
During the period February to April, 2008, the Association and the Local Government Association of SA produced a Murray and Mallee Regional Sustainability Plan, designed to harness the combined efforts of the two organisations and other partners, to address issues facing Councils. This Plan was also adopted at the Association's General Meeting held on the 4th April, 2008.
Delegates undertook a complete review of the 2008-2011 Strategic Plan during February, 2011 resulting in the evolution of the 2011-2014 Strategic Plan, adopted at the 1st April 2011 General Meeting. This Plan was again reviewed in February, 2012, April 2013 and more lately, April, 2014.
At their meeting of the Murray and Mallee Local Government Association, (now the Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) in February 2015 the need for a further review of future direction of the Association was identified as both necessary and timely. Planning for the future of the region and in particular the role of the Association is an imperative if it is to have relevance into the future. At that meeting the MRLGA commissioned a Strategic Review of the Murraylands and Riverland LGA that would ultimately lead to a new Strategic Plan for 2016-2020 and from that a new and more vibrant direction for the Association.
The Strategic Review process was conducted through a range of consultative workshops and consultative methods culminating in a final report to the Board for the February 2016 Meeting including the tabling of the draft Strategic Plan 2016-2020. The MRLGA Strategic Plan 2016-2020 was adopted by the MRLGA Board on 1 April 2016.
From September 2019 the Association embarked on another review, meetings were conducted with the Mayors and CEOs of each of the constituent councils and a strategic planning forum was held in February 2020. The draft strategic plan was released by the Board at the 8 May 2020 General Meeting for consultation with the Constituent Councils, RDA Murraylands and Riverland and the newly formed Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board. The 2020-2025 MRLGA Strategic Plan was formerly endorsed by the Board at the 10 July 2020 Annual General Meeting.
