The local government sector in South Australia manages more than $20 billion worth of community infrastructure, invests $2 billion a year in services for their local communities, and maintains 75,000km of local roads. Roads and transport responsibilities are the most significant issues among council infrastructure obligations, with the value of the SA council roads estimated to be roughly half the total value of all assets in councils’ care – about $10 billion in 2014. Councils also face challenges in funding infrastructure renewal and maintenance, which they address through the development of Long Term Financial Plans.
