Jim Hullick Award

The Jim Hullick Award celebrates partnerships between local government and state and federal government.

The Award recognises public sector workers from state and federal government who have gone above and beyond to collaborate on projects with local councils.

These projects have delivered great outcomes on important issues for people across South Australia.

Recent recipients include Craig Nixon (Department for Environment and Water) for his collaborative work on the Remarkable Southern Flinders Project and Senior Sergeant First Class Russell Dippy (SA Police) for his work in emergency management.

The award is named after former LGA Chief Executive Officer Jim Hullick in honour of his work building partnerships across levels of governments.

Who is eligible

Nominees must:

  • be a state or federal employee (or recent ex-employee)
  • have worked alongside several councils in the last 12 months.

Who can nominate

You are eligible to nominate someone for the Jim Hullick Award if you are:

  • a representative of a South Australian council
  • a representative of a Regional LGA
  • a South Australian Regional Organisation of Councils (SAROC) representative
  • a Greater Adelaide Regional Organisation of Councils (GAROC) representative.

Why should you nominate

The Jim Hullick Award celebrates those in state and federal government who are working with local councils to make a difference.

The award:

  • recognises the contribution of exceptional people in public service
  • showcases the significant outcomes and positive impacts of collaborative projects
  • highlights the value of partnerships between levels of government
  • contributes to the professional development of those nominated.

By nominating, the award also honours the legacy and work of Jim Hullick and his contribution to our state.

Judging criteria

The judges will assess the nominees based on these criteria:

  1. Relationships: Build relationships to collaborate on shared issues.
  2. Communication: Communicate well with local government on key projects.
  3. Achieve: Work with local government to achieve better outcomes for SA.

How to nominate

Nominations closed on Thursday 5 October 2023.

What happens after I nominate?

The judges will review all nominees and choose a winner in early October 2023.

The winner will be announced at the LGA Annual General Meeting on Thursday 26 October 2023.

About Jim Hullick

Jim Hullick, OAM was Chief Executive Officer of the Local Government Association of South Australia from 1976 to 1997.

He set up a number of partnerships that led to the establishment of the Local Government Finance Authority and the LGA Workers Compensation and Mutual Liability Schemes.

His work also led to the first Memorandum of Understanding between a Premier and an LGA President in 1990.

He also served on a number of national and international committees and is a fierce advocate for South Australia and local government.
