About the 2024 LGA OGM Conference

The OGM and conference is split over two days 23 May24 May 2024.

It starts with networking drinks at the welcome reception on Thursday evening at the historic and stylish Electra House.

It then moves into the LGA OGM Conference the following day, at the iconic Adelaide Town Hall.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Welcome Reception: Kick off by connecting with local government elected members and staff – a great opportunity to reconnect, forge valuable new contacts and set the stage for the conference the next day.
  • LGA Conference and Annual General Meeting: This is the heart of the event – the place where your voice is heard. The conference is a fantastic chance to learn more about what's happening across local government with best practice lesson you can take back to your council.

Exploring the future of local government

Our theme this year is Vision 2025: The Future of Local Government.

How have our towns and cities changed since the pandemic? And where do we expect them to go?

As more people choose to work from home, we are seeing a shift in our urban landscape. This can mean the growth of new businesses and technologies, changes in how we work, and shifts in what people like to buy.

But with changes to workplace environments, there are possible transformations in the way our cities and towns look. Find out how these will impact your council—and the steps you need to take to adapt.

Before you attend the event

As a council representative, attending the event empowers you to advocate for the needs and interests of your community.

To make the most of this opportunity, we recommend taking the following steps before the event:

  • Register Your Voting Delegate: Ensure your council has registered its voting delegate – this could be you! Your participation and voice matter in shaping local government in our state.
  • Download Meeting Papers and Agenda (available 30 days prior): Familiarise yourself with the agenda and meeting papers for a thorough understanding of the topics to be discussed and the decisions to be made .

Once this is done, you're prepared to join the discussion and get the most out of the day.

Simon Kuestenmacher, Demographer, Co-Founder – The Demographics Group

South Australia reversed the outflow of residents to the rest of the country and is now growing at record rates. Pressures on house prices, local infrastructure, as well as shifting power balances between local government and the state make the next few years very challenging. The current skills shortage will remain throughout the coming decade and put further pressures on local governments. In his presentation Simon Kuestenmacher explores these issues through the demographic lens and explains why you shouldn’t give up hope.
