Story corner at the Robe Library

This project created fun and interactive sessions aimed at introducing stories, focusing on rhyme, rhythm and repetition for children aged 0-4 years of age in a safe and social setting.

Project summary

This project was an opportunity to create an interactive session, called Story Corner, for babies and young children at Robe Library.

Robe has not previously had a library-based program for young children. A rise in birth rates in the area has led to demand for additional services at the library. This program aimed to help build strong pathways in the brain to help reduce the risk of children in the Robe community having a developmental vulnerability. With limited resources available to families and children in the area, this program benefits the growing number of families in the Robe community.

Story Corner was set up to run once a week for 30 minutes to ensure longevity, stimulation and a safe place for children to learn and establish social skills.

Benefits

This program was developed around the needs of the local community based on data from the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

This data shows 23.9% of South Australia's children have at least one developmental vulnerability.  Story Time at Robe Library has connected families with their community and services

The grant assisted Robe to purchase resources to establish Story Corner. Library staff worked to develop the full logistics of the program including a presentation and weekly themes around key topics of value to the local community.

Given the success of this project the District Council of Robe has decided to provide continued funding for this project.
