Coastal Management Coordination

This project presents the future intent for collaborative action within the local government sector to support long-term social, environmental, and economic resilience for effective coastal management and risk mitigation in South Australia. The project will work to implement a Coastal Coordinator role within the LGA to work with member councils to strengthen collaboration and increase capacity to deliver effective coastal management across SAs 34 coastal councils.

Project background

The purpose of this project is to implement a Coastal Coordinator role within the LGA to work with member councils to strengthen collaboration and increase capacity to deliver effective coastal management responses by:

  • enabling greater collaboration and consistency of approach amongst the 34 coastal councils
  • initiating and coordinating proposals and securing funding and co-investment for joint projects in metropolitan and regional areas
  • aligning projects and funding with sector priorities and agreed strategic plans
  • improving information sharing and collaboration on cross regional matters
  • building capacity on best practice approaches
  • ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources by reducing duplication
  • establishing and building strong working relationships between SACCA, MSCC, regional local government associations, State Government agencies, the Regional Climate Partnerships and other relevant institutions to develop and deliver projects and respond to shared strategic priorities.

Recognising that there is no ‘regional’ LGA structure in the metropolitan area, this role will facilitate collaboration between and input from practitioners within metropolitan coastal councils. While not a key focus of the role, this will ensure functional integration with SACCA and deliver a state-wide approach to coastal management in SA.

The incumbent in the Coordinator position has recently changed, with the Adelaide Coastal Council Network providing input into the recruitment process.

This project has already been able to demonstrate some success and assist the Adelaide Coastal Council Network to progress it’s coastal management work. The position has supported the development of a draft strategic plan for the Adelaide Coastal Council Network and has also supported collaboration by councils in a sand carting review. This has also allow the LGA to submit an additional grant application to Department of Environment and Water for a Coast Snap Project to continue to increase SA council’s capacity in coastal management.
