Review of Local Government (Elections) Act
Project Background
This project will support consultation with the state government and local government in preparation for the next local government elections. The project will engage an officer to support the review of the Local Government (Elections) Act.
The project officer will support the LGA to deal with a number of issues were identified from the conduct of the 2022 local government periodic elections. The Electoral Commission is currently conducting a review of Local Government (Elections) Act 1999 and the appointed officer will support the LGA in collaborating with the Electoral Commission.
Progress, November 2025
Significant progress has been made: the Local Government Election Review Bill has passed both houses of Parliament and awaits assent, while the Community Engagement Charter is finalised for Ministerial approval. These developments require reassessment of milestones and outcomes to ensure councils are supported in implementing legislative changes and preparing for the November 2026 elections.
Revised milestones extend to mid-2026 and include updating caretaker and consultation policies, preparing election guidance, reviewing allowances and reimbursement provisions, and aligning resources with the new Charter. This extension will enable the LGA to deliver comprehensive support, ensuring councils meet compliance requirements and adopt best practice engagement strategies.
The project remains critical to strengthening local democracy and participation, with outcomes focused on legislative implementation, sector readiness, and improved governance frameworks.
