Our 2025 Federal Election platform

SA's future starts local

South Australia's future is built in our streets, neighborhoods, and communities. Every road repaired, park upgraded, local business supported and service delivered happens where people live and work.

Local councils are place-shapers and are part of our state’s growth story.

Essential role of councils

Federal policy and funding must acknowledge the essential role of local government. Stronger local investment means a stronger South Australia.

Councils need a fair share of national funding to make sure communities can continue to have the infrastructure, services and support they deserve.

This election, we're calling for

This federal election, we’re calling on leaders to back local, fund local, and build SA’s future. SA’s future starts local, we want to make sure Canberra delivers.

Fair funding

  • Boost funding (both flexible and fixed) so councils can keep delivering essential services and infrastructure.
  • Make sure financial assistance grants keep up with inflation and rising costs.
  • Act on the LGA’s recommendations to the federal inquiry.

Liveable communities

  • Fund community and housing infrastructure to support growth, especially in regional areas.
  • Invest $1.1 billion annually in housing and infrastructure and $500 million in community infrastructure.
  • Make sure all communities have the facilities and resources needed for childcare services.

Road funding and safety

  • Make SA’s $20 million annual supplementary road funding permanent, with CPI increases.
  • Fund the Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass to ease congestion and improve efficiency.
  • Invest $600 million annually in safer local roads – $500 million for upgrades and $100 million for safety programs.
  • Create a new road funding model that isn’t dependent on the fuel excise, considering changes in the vehicle market.

Emergency management

  • Provide $900 million annually to help councils improve disaster preparedness and response.
  • Review disaster funding rules to give councils clearer access and align damage thresholds with other states.
  • Boost funding for climate adaptation and disaster resilience to support local governments.
  • Establish a sustainable, non-competitive emergency funding model for councils.

Climate and coastal adaptation

  • Create a $400 million national climate adaptation fund to help local governments tackle climate challenges.
  • Invest in reliable climate and hazard data to support informed decision-making and targeted action in high-risk areas.

Product stewardship

  • Standardise and expand container deposit schemes nationwide to include glass wine, spirit, and cordial bottles.
  • Create a mandatory recycling program for batteries, which includes products embedded with lithium-ion batteries.
