Local Government drought update

As drought conditions continue to affect many regions across South Australia, LGA has been advocating strongly for additional support for councils, local businesses and primary producers.

While we welcomed the State Government’s $73.4 million drought relief package, our call for a State-supported Council Rate Deferral Scheme was not adopted. The Treasurer has confirmed that rate relief will remain a matter for individual councils to manage through their existing hardship policies.

Given the significant interest from members and the financial pressures many councils are facing, LGA will host a webinar to outline the current situation, discuss what the State Government’s position means in practice and explore practical next steps for councils supporting drought-affected communities.
