Connecting Bute’s outdoor play spaces
The regional community of Bute can enjoy a well-connected network of shared bike and pedestrian paths, thanks to the completion of the Connecting Bute’s Outdoor Play Spaces project.
Led by Bridget Johns, Grants and Investment Coordinator at Barunga West Council, the redevelopment – funded through the latest phase of the SA Healthy Towns Challenge – seamlessly links the local fauna park, playground and skatepark.
"The addition of a silo art display and viewing area, along with a road safety bike track, as well as activation events of these facilities has transformed underused spaces into vibrant hubs for outdoor activities," Bridget said.
The playground was also updated with more nature play elements and the irrigation system was improved to ensure green grass for play.
Previously, outdoor activity in Bute was limited, with few areas for children to safely ride bikes and use playgrounds due to the frequent movement of farm machinery and trucks through the township.
The project will positively improve the mental health and wellbeing of all people – both young and old – living in the township, boost physical activity and tackle high obesity rates, reduce stress and depression and combat isolation.
When combined with community-wide events, the new dual bike and pedestrian track and upgraded playground will contribute to a more active and engaged local population in Bute.
"Connecting Bute’s Outdoor Play Spaces initiative exemplifies the power of community-driven projects in creating a healthier, more dynamic living environment," Bridget said.
"The enhanced infrastructure and revitalised community spaces ensure Bute residents can enjoy a more active and connected lifestyle, promoting wellbeing and movement for all."
