Happy to chat at Port Adelaide Enfield
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield set out to address the impact of social isolation and loneliness within its community with the introduction of the 'Happy To Chat' initiative.
Launched in July 2019, but halted due to the pandemic and relaunched in mid-2023, the program has created opportunities for locals to connect, build social networks and participate in activities.
Jan Angelo, Health and Wellbeing Coordinator of City of Port Adelaide and Enfield, shared how the project went well beyond conversations.
“The focus was on empowering and building community capacity and encouraging individuals to play an active role in their own health and wellbeing, fostering resilience and a sense of belonging”.
Key partners, including Port Plaza shopping Centre and the Port Adelaide Library, supported the project by providing dedicated seating areas, free coffee and collaborative marketing efforts.
With a team of dedicated volunteers, the program conducted 39 face-to-face sessions, connecting with over 250 community members on a one-on-one basis.
Recognised in industry publications and a semi-finalist in the 2022 Community Achievement Awards for the Loneliness Cure Award, Happy to Chat successfully motivated people in Port Adelaide Enfield to explore volunteering opportunities and join new activities.
Key learnings emphasised the power of brief conversations, the importance of creating welcoming environments, and the commonality of the need for community connection.
The project is actively evolving, with new pilot programs, including Happy to Chat Mum's Group, Women's Group, and Happy to Paint, demonstrating the council’s commitment to sustainability and ongoing community support.
