Co-designed children's policy

This project was a partnership between Campbelltown City Council and the local community to develop and co-design an evidence-based Child-Friendly Action Plan.

About

This project aimed to design a new child friendly action plan for the City of Campbelltown. A working group was established to engage closely with key stakeholders including local preschools, primary schools and childcare centres to develop a co-designed plan.

This project will support Campbelltown to build the strategy to be able to improve their Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) profile.

Using this project the council aims to improve the 2021 data from the AEDC that showed:

  • 30% of vulnerable children reside in Magill
  • there was an increase in children with additional needs
  • a higher percentage of Indian & Chinese families (non-english speaking backgrounds) residing in the area
  • participation in local playgroups had decreased.

Background

This project provided an opportunity for Campbelltown children, families and local stakeholders to collaborate and share their ideas as part of a co-design process.

It created an opportunity for the Child-Friendly Campbelltown Action Plan to be co-designed with key stakeholders to deliver a stronger, more connected, child friendly community in Campbelltown.

Outcomes

A Children's Policy was endorsed by the City of Campbelltown in August 2023. It will allow the council to embed this approach and work with the community to build a child friendly city. This will create opportunities for the council to build long term strategic partnerships with relevant community stakeholders.

The council partnered with the Magill Kindy to deliver some community events during this project and used these to understand the needs and wants of local families.

From this project council opportunities to:

  • increase local playgroups
  • improve promotion of existing play places
  • produce a disability services guide for children and families
  • implement an action plan to ensure a whole of village approach to raising children.
