Support framework and guidelines for visually impaired Council Members

This project will develop and implement a support framework and guidelines for the support requirements of visually impaired Council Members. The project will include the development or provision of services, training, handbooks, guides or codes related to the administration of legislation under which councils operate.

Outcome

This project will create a range of resources enabling South Australian councils to understand better and support vision-impaired Council Members.

Background

The City of Victor Harbor is the first council to have elected a legally blind Council Member. The local government is promoted as an inclusive sector supporting those with disabilities. However, most councils do not have the technology and resources to help support Council Members with visual disabilities.

This project will enable us to research, develop and record the requirements that a council will need to keep Council Members or staff members with a visual disability – opening up opportunities for other people with a disability of this nature to participate in local government.

Project Progress, 15 January 2024

35% of this project is completed.

A dedicated project support officer has been hired and is working closely with inclusion experts across the state. They have been collating findings into a running sheet that will form the case study.

Project staff collaborate with other councils to understand how they implement accessibility across their organisation.

This project was approved by the LGA CEO on 3 July 2023.
