Who this is for
South Australian councils seeking support to strengthen their climate change response and build organisational capacity.
What's being delivered
- Funding for an LGA Climate Change Support Advisor for a two-year pilot (September 2025 to 2027).
- Delivery of support aligned with the priorities identified in the 2024 Local Government Climate Change Support Plan.
- Targeted support for councils through technical advice, practical resources, knowledge sharing, and communities of practice.

About the project
Climate change is creating challenges and opportunities at a scale and pace that is outstripping the capacity of individual councils.
LGA has an important role in supporting councils to build capability, share knowledge and collaborate on common challenges. Through the development of the 2024 Local Government Climate Change Support Plan, councils identified a need for greater sector-wide support to progress climate action.
Identified support areas
The project identified six emerging themes where councils would benefit from additional support:
- Closing the maturity gap
- Climate disclosures
- Assets
- Procurement
- Finance
- Community
The LGA Climate Change Support Advisor Pilot has been established to help LGA respond to these identified needs. The role will also support councils to strengthen their climate risk responses through practical guidance and sector-wide support.
Project funding
This project is funded through the Local Government Research and Development Scheme.
This scheme allocates funding to projects that support the development of SA local government. Successful applicants are decided through an annual grant round.
