Little creators STEM workshop
About
The STEM-based program was delivered by Loxton and Waikerie libraries. The program focused on participation from children (0-5 years) and their parents or carers using educational and fun STEM concepts.
The Little Creators Stem workshop was designed as 1 hour session delivered over four weeks. Participants were provided with a science discovery box to work through STEM focused activities.
Background
This project responded to the Australian Early Development Census data, showing the Loxton Waikerie community has a higher percentage of developmentally vulnerable children than South Australia overall in the areas of:
- physical health and wellbeing
- emotional maturity
- language
- cognitive skills.
This data showed early intervention for childhood learning is vitally important in the Loxton Waikerie community.
Outcomes
The STEM based program responded to the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) data by reaching 178 children between 2-5 years old, to participate in science discovery sessions. All participants gained basic knowledge of the four topics covered - Light and Colour, Magnetism, Balance and Coordination and Sound.
The program, the resources and the presenters received positive feedback from the children and their guardians who attended.
Attendees were not frequent library users, highlighting the reach that these programs have to help promote library services on a broader scale to differing demographics.
Networking/Relationships
This program has established new networks and local community relationships. The program has now become part of the libraries regular calendar of events and will continue to be offered in differing formats to meet community needs.
