Geri-fit Victor Harbor – using the local library to support active ageing
Victor Harbor locals aged 60 and above have kept healthy and active thanks to the Geri-Fit community program.
This evidence-based, group training – held at the Victor Harbor Library – focused on enhancing strength, balance, gait, and flexibility for older adults.
The program is designed for accessibility and allows participants to work with dumbbell weights or stretch bands while seated in a chair, catering for people of all fitness and mobility levels and allowing them to move at their own pace.
What sets Geri-Fit apart is its symbiotic relationship with the local library, providing a space where older individuals naturally gather – whether it be to borrow books, use the internet, access free services or seek assistance.
The initiative emerged from a study conducted by Curtin University in Perth, which explored the potential of public libraries as effective settings for engaging older adults in physical activity.
Victor Harbor Library, the exclusive host in South Australia, has seen tremendous success, with ongoing classes and a growing waitlist.
Tania Murphy, who is the council’s Active Wellbeing Officer and leads the Community Wellbeing team, said Geri-Fit is free to attend and she has been encouraged by the uptake so far.
"If you’re 60 or older and want to get fit alongside other like-minded people, Geri-Fit is a fantastic way to keep active, get your body moving, and make connections with other people in your community – at whatever pace you feel comfortable with," Tania said.
The 12-week sessions, held twice a week, have earned very positive feedback. Tania ran six groups over the course of 2023 and will run six more groups throughout 2024.
