GRANDFriends – creating connections across generations

Unley Council's GRANDFriends program was inspired by ABC's 'Old People's Home for Teenagers'.

The aim of the project was to build connections between young people and older adults. And through this experience, to break age-based stereotypes, provide enjoyable experiences, and encourage learning and skill-sharing.

About the GRANDFriends program

The GRANDFriends program first ran in 2023, from September to November.

Five bi-weekly sessions were held. Each session ran for 3 hours and included various activities like lawn bowls, cooking and dot-painting. The main focus for the sessions was fun, learning and relationship-building.

Funding and partnerships

GRANDFriends was supported by SA Government's Office for Ageing Well, through their 'Age Friendly SA Grants'.

The program was developed in collaboration with LifeChanger Foundation, a mental health and wellbeing nonprofit.

Promotion and reach

GRANDFriends was promoted through flyers, Facebook, Eventbrite, community centers, libraries, and secondary schools.

The program attracted 18 participants – eight older adults (75 to 85 years) and ten young people (11 to 13 years).

Key achievements

Key achievements of the program included:

  • enhancing respect for all ages
  • recognising commonalities across generations
  • fostering a sense of community connection
  • developing knowledge and skills.

Positive impact on participants

The program had a positive impact on participants. The older adults reported they:

  • found a sense of purpose in providing mentorship
  • felt appreciated, respected and trusted by the young people.

Young participants said they were able to be themselves and had fun with the older participants.

Challenges and learnings

Even though very few challenges were faced, minor changes were still considered for the 2024 program.

Changes considered included:

  • offering daytime sessions to better suit older participants' preferences
  • holding sessions within school hours to make it easier for school students to participate.

It was also identified that partnering with a retirement village could ensure ongoing sustainability. This type of partnership was the model in 'Old People's Home for Teenagers'.

Outcome

The GRANDFriends program was a success and had a positive impact on participants. It demonstrated the potential for ongoing intergenerational programs in the community.

Three GRANDFriends programs have been delivered so far, with a fourth planned for 2025.
