Ngutungka West Lakes community wellbeing hub

An innovative community facility located in the City of Charles Sturt has earned recognition for connecting people and improving the lives of those residing in the council area.

Ngutungka West Lakes recently received high commendation in the Minister for Health and Wellbeing Excellence in Public Health Awards, solidifying its reputation as a leading institution in the space.

Unveiled in April 2022, the $8.3 million facility, which was built under the leadership of Manager of Community Connections, Bec Lyons, transcends the traditional library role, transforming into a state-of-the-art community hub that redefines the expectations typically associated with library spaces.

Speaking about the new space Bec Lyons highlighted how the role of libraries have changed over time, offering much more for the community.

“More than just a repository for books, Ngutungka West Lakes is guided by a community development framework and offers a spectrum of programs and services that enrich the lives and enhance the wellbeing of residents and the broader community,” Bec said.

“Ngutungka holistically addresses various dimensions of wellbeing by offering integrated services, inclusive spaces, cultural integration, health services collaboration, learning opportunities, social connection and diverse programs that respond to the physical, mental, cultural, educational, and social needs of the community.”

Situated on Mikawama Country, the facility seamlessly integrates into the local landscape adjacent allied health services and community spaces – it also features a community kitchen at its heart.

Named 'place of knowledge' in the Kaurna language, Ngutungka West Lakes is a celebration of Aboriginal culture, promoting inclusivity and cultural respect, and is a key addition to the Charles Sturt libraries network.

The success of this facility has been a catalyst for the construction of the council's second hub, Ngutungka Henley (in 2024). This hub will integrate the Henley Library and the Henley & Grange Community Centre.
