A community’s response to suicide prevention

In response to the devastating impact of multiple suicides in the Sedan/Cambrai area, the Mid Murray Council took a lead role in founding the Mid Murray Suicide Prevention Network, later renamed Caring Connected Communities.

Recognising the urgency of community support, the council collaborated with local entities, including the Sedan Progress Association, regional Lutheran Church leaders, and the Sedan Historic Enthusiast’s Den, to facilitate open forums addressing suicide.

Natalie Davis, Community Services Manager with the Mid Murray Council, spoke about the impact of the suicide prevention network.

"The Mid Murray Suicide Prevention Network is made up of dedicated community members, who care deeply for our community’s future and are passionate about supporting wellbeing,” Natalie said.

“The actions of the network members have been incredible, and the forums they’ve held have opened opportunities for community members to unite, share concerns, and discuss ways to collectively work toward mental health awareness, suicide prevention and wellbeing promotion.”

Run by volunteers, the network continues to be a beacon of hope, organising community events and implementing initiatives like memorial gardens and holding mental health workshops across the region. These initiatives have not just helped raise awareness but also provided tangible support and healing spaces for the community.

Despite geographical challenges, the council demonstrated resilience by leveraging technology, upgrading information systems, and facilitating online meetings, ensuring the network's continued operation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a focus on sustainability, the council's role in nurturing the Mid Murray Suicide Prevention Network has empowered the community to become self-sufficient.

The success of this initiative is measured not only in the activities being delivered but also in the compassion demonstrated by the dedicated members of the network.
