Sustainable food systems in a changing climate
In a world where the future of food faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, the Enabling Resilient Food Systems project is providing an innovative and collaborative approach to build stronger local food systems.
With one in four children living in food-insecure households, this forward-thinking initiative was:
- delivered by the City of Onkaparinga, City of Marion, Mount Barker Council and Alexandrina Council
- focused on strengthening relationships between local and state government partners and bringing together the community and those working in the food sector.
Linda Enright, Healthy Lifestyle Officer with the City of Onkaparinga shared about the project and why we all need to look at solutions for the future of our food.
"This was an exercise to explore healthy and sustainable food systems and look at what we can do to overcome barriers like climate change, reduce food waste, support local food growing and protect the environment," Linda said.
Using recommendations from the Australian Food Network’s research, the project developed guidelines to help build better communication and enable clear action from local councils.
Workshops hosted by the South Australian Urban Food Systems Network – which were attended by 140 participants from the community, businesses involved in food production and key stakeholders – also supported this.
The project demonstrated the crucial role of councils in supporting resilient and sustainable food systems. Outcomes have been captured on the Urban Food Network.
