Local government data governance framework
This project has led to the development of a data management framework for councils, which has been made available through the Local Government Information Technology website:
Purpose of the framework
The Framework is designed to meet legal, organisational, and customer needs. It provides local governments with practical and cost-effective guidance on data treatment and privacy, reduces data-related risks, and implements data governance processes and systems.
Specifically, the Local Government Data Governance Framework has been established to address:
- escalating data complexity and volume
- data quality and accuracy
- data silos
- regulatory compliance
- policy formation
- data privacy
- data sharing and collaboration
- data security
- resource allocation.
A self-assessment tool is continuing to be developed as part of the project to help councils audit their current data governance maturity and benchmark their progress.
The project builds on the success of the LGITSA Cyber Security Framework and Toolkit, which recognised data identification, classification, and governance as vital steps to embedding good cyber security practices.
