Feasibility study: Local government role in electric vehicle charging

This project will investigate the role of local government in public electric vehicle (EV) charging. It will identify potential opportunities for councils and recommend an implementation path.

Outcomes

This project explored the strategic role councils could play in delivering public EV charging infrastructure. A report was produced which assessed the viability, benefits, risks, and models for local government involvement in EV charging.

The project evaluated technological, environmental, financial, and social dimensions, including dynamic pricing, renewable energy integration, and equitable access.

Feasibility of EV Charging in local government

This study concludes that councils have a viable role in this space. It provides detailed analysis on operational models, revenue opportunities, grid support mechanisms, and equitable access. All of which were key investigative goals outlined in the original project proposal.

The feasibility study is not a static output. It's been designed with modular, adaptable recommendations that can evolve alongside advancements in EV technology, policy changes, and market developments. This makes sure councils can continue to draw upon their insights well beyond the project’s end date.

By linking EV chargers with existing renewable infrastructure, there's the possibility to create a forward-thinking system where EVs could be charged using clean energy on the grid, lowering emissions. Through innovative operating models, there's potential to develop the EV charging network to stabilise the grid system. This would be through incentivising daytime charging when there's excess renewable energy supply, which in turn may reduce evening and nighttime demand.

Overall, by embedding flexibility, accessibility, and strategic relevance into its design and follow-up, the project make sure its benefits will continue to guide and influence sustainable infrastructure initiatives across the sector.
