1 December 2022
Changes to the Road Traffic Act 1961 and related regulations will come into effect on 12 December 2022.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport have advised that a proclamation for the Statutes Amendment (Transport Portfolio) Act 2021 partial-commencement was gazetted on 24 November 2022 along with consequential regulations (p.6688-99).

The new laws will come into effect on 12 December 2022 and include amendments to:

  • broaden the regulation-making power for the payment of parking fees under the Road Traffic Act 1961
  • amend regulation 22 of the Road Traffic (Road Rules—Ancillary and Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations 2014, so that payment for ticketed parking may be made with an electronic device or a method determined by the council (for a given parking area)
  • insert regulation 66A into the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous) Regulations 2014, to prescribe the electronic devices which may be used to pay parking fees
