Give your feedback on the Australian Early Development Census Survey for Local Councils

17 February 2023
Submit your feedback to the Australian Early Development Census to help build an evidence base to support council work in childhood development.

The Office for the Early Years is encouraging councils to complete the Australian Early Development Census Survey for Local Councils.

The Census is the only nationwide data collection of early childhood development at the time children start full-time school. The survey is designed to help understand what is working well and what needs to be improved in local communities to better support childhood development.

The results of the survey will help better respond to early childhood needs including planning, decision making, services, programs and partnerships.

Council staff whose role relates to children, families or community development are encouraged to fill out the short survey online.

Background

The Department for Education’s Office for the Early Years supports childhood early learning and development in South Australia.

It provides a single point of leadership across the public sector to improve the proportion of children developmentally on-track when starting school.

The Office recognises local government is integral to supporting communities. Many of the services councils provide can impact children’s early development outcomes. These include town planning, public health and safety, transport and housing, cultural activities, parks and playgrounds.

It is important that council decision making and planning is informed by evidence.
