Give your feedback on a new registration scheme for engineers
The registration scheme would initially apply to engineers in building and construction. It would then expand to cover broader areas of engineering, including the work done in local government.
Should this proposal be approved, a number of positions within local government may require registration, including:
- civil engineer (e.g. structures, roads, buildings)
- geotechnical engineer
- hydraulics engineer (e.g. stormwater, water supply, wastewater)
- transport engineer
- urban development engineer
- municipal services engineer.
To register under the current proposal, engineers must have either a Bachelor or Master of Engineering. This must be accompanied by a minimum five years of practical experience, with at least four years post-graduate experience.
It is likely engineers may also need to renew their registration every three years to ensure continued compliance with evolving industry standards.
While the exact registration cost remains undisclosed, similar processes (such as becoming a Chartered Engineer through Engineers Australia) incur substantial fees.
Whether your council considers this proposal a positive chance, or a potential issue, we encourage you to give feedback. Please read the Discussion Paper and respond via YourSAy by Friday 8 September.
