Nominations open for supplementary council elections

20 January 2023
Nominations are now open for supplementary council elections across the state’s Central, Eyre Peninsula and Limestone Coast regions.

This is an opportunity for local leaders and those passionate about making a positive difference to become elected members.

Mayoral races will be held in Kingston District and Robe councils, while vacant councillor positions will be contested in Copper Coast, Kimba, Mount Remarkable, Northern Areas, Southern Mallee, Streaky Bay, Tumby Bay and Wudinna councils.

LGA Chief Executive Officer Clinton Jury emphasised the important role elected members play in shaping their communities, representing local needs and influencing strategic direction.

“Mayors and councillors come from all walks of life and bring with them different experiences and insights that make a difference for the good of their community,” Mr Jury said.

“Elected members play an important role representing their local area and can stand up for community needs at a grassroots level – making a difference across a range of areas.

“Councils are the closest level of government to communities and provide essential services, infrastructure and facilities that bring communities together and strengthen economies.”

Mr Jury encouraged more diversity on councils and noted the many benefits of having elected members from different backgrounds, cultures and professions.

“Greater diversity in local representatives strengthens the representation of communities, supports the sharing of different ideas and perspectives, adds to richer council discussions and creates better decision-making and outcomes,” he said.

“If you’re over 18, an Australian citizen and eligible to vote in the elections you have the potential to stand for election.

“If you're community-minded, collaborative, someone keen to make a difference and able to listen, you should consider becoming an elected member.

“While you need a passion to serve your community, you don’t need to know everything at once – if successful, you’ll receive training, induction and ongoing professional development opportunities to build your skills and understanding of council.

“Representing your local community is a rewarding experience and provides the opportunity to learn about a range of topics and develop as a leader.”

Nominations to run as a candidate close 27 January 2023. Voting packs will be distributed by mail from 15 February, with voting closing 14 March. To find out more visit www.ecsa.gov.au
