Periodic adjustment of council member allowances
In line with Section 76 of the Local Government Act 1999 a council member is entitled to an allowance as determined by the independent Remuneration Tribunal of South Australia.
The Remuneration Tribunal Determination sets the annual allowance for all councillors, as well as sitting fees and travel time allowances where applicable.
All allowances must be adjusted in accordance with section 76(9) of the Local Government Act, on the first, second and third anniversaries of a periodic election to reflect changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Council member allowances are due for adjustment with effect from 12 November 2023. This is the first anniversary of the November 2022 periodic election.
Annual allowance adjustment
The LGA has calculated the adjustment required using the CPI All groups index for Adelaide for the September 2023 Quarter.
The CPI percentage change for the September 2022 quarter to September 2023 quarter is 5.9%.
The table below sets out the adjustments to allowances and related items specified within the Remuneration Tribunal’s 2022 Determination 2 – Members of Local Government and 2002 Determination 3 – Allowances for Adelaide City Council.
