Ban on smoking and vaping in public outdoor areas
Some of the smoke-free areas to be included in this ban are:
- early childhood services premises, and education and children’s services facilities (including schools) and within 10 metres of their boundaries
- within 10 metres of entrances to non-residential building entrances, such as government buildings, shopping centres and commercial buildings
- at public hospitals and health facilities, private hospitals and residential aged care facilities, and within 10 metres of their boundaries (regulations for residential aged care facilities will come into operation 12 months after the day on which other regulations are made)
- within outdoor public swimming facilities
- within 10 metres of a sporting venue during an organised underage sporting event, training or practice session
- major events venues declared under the Major Events Act 2013
These new laws are in addition to existing smoke-free and vape-free laws near playgrounds, outdoor dining, vehicles, enclosed public places and public transport.
What your council must do to comply
Your council will need to install signage at some of your facilities. Signage must be installed by Friday 1 March.
To order your signs and stickers, or for downloadable artwork to print your own, visit the SA Health website.
While SA Health’s Clearing the Air campaign is being run to raise awareness about the changes, councils are encouraged to ensure local community and sporting groups are aware of the new requirements.
Sporting organisations
The Office of Sport and Recreation have sent information to approximately 250 sporting organisations to facilitate signage orders at sporting facilities. More information about signage requirements including enquiries from local sporting clubs can be sent to Thomas Etherton at the Office for Sport and Recreation.
Jetties
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport are currently arranging smoke-free signage for State Government managed jetties. The department will be providing guidance directly to councils about leased jetties. For more information about signage on jetties contact Gonz Uyttenhove.
