LGA welcomes Black Spot funding for South Australia
Local councils manage around 76% of South Australia’s road network and maintaining roads is the single largest expenditure councils have, highlighting the importance of external funding.
LGA CEO Clinton Jury said the 2024-25 round of Black Spot grants would enhance safety at several higher-risk hot spots throughout the state.
“Everyone who travels on South Australian roads – whether it be locals commuting to and from work, families driving to weekend sport, or visitors to our state – should feel they can do so safely,” Mr Jury said.
“South Australian councils do an incredible job maintaining our road networks with the resources they have, but we know their budgets only stretch so far.
“Federal funding through initiatives like the Black Spot program is critical for keeping communities safer by identifying higher-risk roads and financing necessary improvements, helping reduce the number of serious accidents on our roads.”
There were sadly 117 lives lost on South Australia roads in 2023.
Safety improvements being funded under this latest round of works include a new roundabout, safety barriers, improved line-marking and a scramble crossing.

About Black Spot funding
The Federal Government’s Black Spot program funds safety measures at locations where several serious crashes are known to have occurred or are at risk of occurring.
State and territory governments, local governments, community groups and associations, road user groups, industry and individuals can apply for funding through the program.
Nominations are considered annually by Black Spot Consultative Panels in each jurisdiction, which provide an opportunity for stakeholders to have a say in the project selection process and ensure projects of the highest priority and importance to the local community are recommended for approval.
LGA welcomes the chance to have a nominee on the selection panel alongside other industry bodies and state agencies.
