New local government resource guides to help councils enhance community wellbeing
The new resource guides offer councils evidence-based insights and practical tools to help in the planning, implementation and evaluation of preventive health initiatives.
With a focus on addressing the broader determinants of health, the guides provide essential information and pathways to resources, helping councils at every stage of their community wellbeing programs, from those just starting out to those with established strategies.
The guides cover a variety of topics, including:
- Preventive health and community wellbeing – an introduction to preventive health and the opportunities for local governments to support wellbeing.
- The determinants of health – how factors such living conditions, social context and culture influence community health.
- Inclusive and connected communities – a focus on inclusion, diversity, equity and fostering social connections.
- Supporting physically active communities – guidance on how councils can promote both structured and unstructured physical activity opportunities.
- Planning and evaluating community wellbeing – practical steps for planning and evaluating successful health and wellbeing initiatives.
Developed through consultations with local councils, the resource guides are designed to accommodate the diverse needs of councils across South Australia, including location, size and community priorities.
The guides are filled with case studies from councils with successful preventive health projects, providing valuable insights into challenges faced and lessons learned.
This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of councils to facilitate preventive health efforts.
