Single-use plastic changes coming into effect
This week, the Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) (Prohibited Plastic Products) Amendment Regulations 2024 were gazetted and will come into effect on 1 September 2024.
This followed consultation on the next stages of South Australia’s single-use and other plastic product bans.
The LGA has actively been involved through ongoing feedback to develop the single-use plastic legislation and regulations.
Through consulting with our member councils, we’ve used this feedback to:
- create numerous formal submissions to Green Industries SA
- provide direct feedback to Green Industries SA through its Single-use Plastics Taskforce.
What these changes mean for councils
Based on the feedback received during the consultation period, several significant changes have been made to the regulations.
This includes transition timeframes for labelling and finalising Australian Standard certification for compostable food and beverage items, as well as new exemptions for some items.
A summary table of all the changes made to the regulations are available on the Replace the Waste website.
