New wave of community wastewater innovation projects funded

31 July 2025
Four projects have received funding through the 2024-25 Community Wastewater Innovation Fund to drive innovation and improve wastewater management outcomes across South Australia.

Alexandrina Council, Flinders Ranges Council, Environment Health Australia and the University of South Australia will share in nearly $220,000 through the latest round of the fund, to deliver initiatives that explore smarter treatment technologies, data-driven monitoring and digital infrastructure for wastewater systems.

The funding round opened in February and closed in early March, with 14 applications submitted requesting more than $520,000 in funding, and with a total project value of just over $755,000.

LGA South Australia President, Mayor Heather Holmes-Ross said the strong interest reflects the local government sector’s commitment to exploring new solutions to wastewater challenges.

“Community Wastewater Management Systems are vital infrastructure that support the health, liveability and sustainability of many regional communities across South Australia,” Mayor Holmes-Ross said.

“At a time when housing shortages continue to present challenges right across the state, having this type of critical wastewater infrastructure in place to encourage and support new development is essential.

“Councils and local government stakeholders continue to show leadership in identifying practical and forward-thinking approaches to wastewater management and how we can keep adapting and improving.

“These funded projects will help build capacity and deliver long-term benefits to local communities.”

Each project is exploring smarter, more efficient approaches to wastewater management.

Alexandrina Council is trialling aerobic granular sludge technology to improve nutrient removal and boost treatment plant capacity, while Environmental Health Australia will develop a statewide business case to improve efficiency and compliance in wastewater management.

Successful applications were assessed by the CWMS Sub-Committee on their innovation, purpose, expected outcomes and value for money.

Each successful project will report back to the LGA on outcomes and lessons learned, contributing to broader sector knowledge and continuous improvement.

The Community Wastewater Innovation Fund is delivered by LGA South Australia, on behalf of the state government, through the Local Government Community Wastewater Management System Program.
