SA Government’s $674 million response to the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence
The webinar was followed by the State’s Government’s announcement of $674 million in funding over the next 10 years to implement the the Royal Commission’s findings.
The Royal Commission, which delivered its final report in August 2025, made 136 recommendations, spanning prevention, intervention, response, recovery and healing.
Importantly for councils, the Report recognises that local government has a role to play in several areas such as safe and effective help seeking, crisis response and prevention.
The state government has now outlined a raft of measures to address the findings and immediate safety needs of survivors, while laying the foundation for sustainable, long-term reforms.
These include:
- more services, flexible support and finding better outcomes
- investment in policing and prevention
- effective interventions
- ensuring the justice system protects witnesses and is centred around survivors
- building awareness and understanding
- governance and leadership.
During the webinar, the Minister committed to ongoing engagement with the local government sector, including future discussions on how councils can support and contribute to the implementation of the reforms.
LGA’s submission to the Royal Commission on behalf of the sector, made 44 recommendations covering areas such as support for councils, policy and legislative support and funding.
LGA will continue to work with the State Government to ensure councils are informed, supported and meaningfully involved as these reforms progress.
