Councils gain certainty with CHSP extension to 2029

25 August 2026
LGA welcomes the Australian Government’s decision to extend Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) contracts until 30 June 2029 and retain CHSP as a standalone program.

The decision provides greater certainty for older South Australians, councils and other providers delivering essential support in their communities, particularly in regional and rural areas where alternative services may not be available.

Earlier this year, LGA’s submission to the Australian Government’s inquiry into the transition of CHSP to Support at Home advocated for the continuation of CHSP as a standalone program and highlighted the vital role councils play in supporting older people to remain living independently in their communities.

However, LGA also recognises that the broader aged care reforms remain complex and continue to present challenges for councils as they consider the future of their aged care services.

Councils are navigating rising costs, workforce pressures and evolving regulatory and administrative requirements while also preparing for the transition to the new Support at Home arrangements.

The extension of CHSP contracts provides welcome certainty, but it is important that the longer-term reform process considers the realities of delivering services in local communities and the particular challenges faced by councils in regional, rural and remote areas.

LGA supports continued consultation with local government and other providers as the Australian Government considers the long-term future of CHSP, including the role of block funding and how CHSP can work alongside Support at Home.
