Councils share in extra funding to support coastal adaptation
The program, which in May received a commendation at the Planning Institute Australia 2026 National Awards for Planning Excellence, supports councils to plan for current and future coastal hazards across the state.
Recently, the program facilitated an expression of interest process inviting existing grant recipients to apply for extra funding to help their work.
The following councils have been successful and will receive the detailed amounts:
- Copper Coast Council - $42,480
- Kingston District Council - $22,000
- City of Port Lincoln - $23,940
- District Council of Robe - $20,000
This funding will allow councils to expand the scope of their projects based on work to date.
As an example, Copper Coast Council will use the funding to undertake a condition assessment of their coastal protection structures to improve the hazard and risk assessments, while the District Council of Robe will enhance its economic assessment of adaptation options through additional community engagement.
About SA Climate Ready Coasts
The SA Climate Ready Coasts program is improving the approach to coastal management and accelerating coastal hazard adaptation planning in South Australia.
It is doing this through a series of staged, connected projects and activities that will coordinate consistent approaches to coastal hazard adaptation, improve understanding of coastal risk, increase capacity and knowledge of coastal hazard adaptation planning ,and create evidence-based decisions and investments in the coast.
The program is being delivered by LGA South Australia along with several partners: SA Coast Protection Board, Department for Environment and Water, Adelaide Coastal Councils Network and SA Coastal Councils Alliance.
