Help shape the future of South Australia’s libraries

6 October 2026
South Australian councils and communities are being encouraged to have their say on the future direction of the state's library network, with the Libraries Board of South Australia commencing consultation on its new Strategic Plan 2027-2032.

The consultation is open on the government’s YourSAy platform, until 26 October 2026.

The new Strategic Plan will guide the future of the State Library of South Australia and South Australia's public and school community libraries over the next five years, identifying priorities, opportunities and aspirations for the sector.

Councils are encouraged to:

The consultation also includes a State Library Summit on 12 October 2026.

LGA submission

LGA will prepare a submission on behalf of the local government sector and is seeking opportunities to ensure councils have a strong voice in the development of the new strategy.

The development of a new strategic plan presents an important opportunity to highlight the value of public libraries and their role in supporting lifelong learning, digital inclusion, social connection and community wellbeing.

Libraries advocacy

The consultation follows ongoing advocacy regarding the funding of South Australia's public library network.

We have consistently advocated for a renewed commitment to state-local government indexation on any funding agreement.

LGA's submission will build on this advocacy, seeking greater recognition of local government's role in library service delivery and the need for sustainable partnership arrangements that support the evolving needs of communities.

Have your say

The consultation is open until 26 October 2026 via the YourSAy platform. Councils are invited to send LGA a copy of their feedback to:
