Search begins for the next big idea in South Australian libraries
The Award celebrates innovation across the state’s public library network and highlights the role libraries play in supporting South Australians every day.
LGA Chief Executive Officer Victoria MacKirdy said South Australia’s public libraries were among the most valued and widely used community services.
“South Australia’s 140 public libraries collectively lend more than 11.5 million items and offer more than 64,000 programs each year,” Ms MacKirdy said.
“With nearly half a million members, South Australia’s libraries make a difference for many – whether its helping people discover the joy of reading, apply for jobs, access technology or connect to community programs and activities.
“This award is named in honour of former Libraries Board of South Australia Chair Jim Crawford, who played a key role in establishing the statewide public library network we need and value today.”
The successful library will receive a $10,000 cash prize which may be used to:
- develop or upgrade library services
- provide professional development for library staff
- expand or build upon an existing innovation
- purchase library materials.
“South Australia’s public libraries are trusted, welcoming and accessible places where everyone belongs,” Ms MacKirdy said.
“We want to hear about the bold ideas, inspiring people and practical innovations that are helping residents.”
Nominations may be submitted by anyone working for a South Australian public library.
Applications close Monday 12 October 2026.
Finalists will be put to a People’s Choice Vote, giving South Australians the opportunity to vote for the library innovation they believe has made the greatest contribution to its community.
Voting details will be announced following selection of the finalists.
