Thousands of South Australians stand together to protect the State’s iconic jetties

7 July 2026
More than 2,200 South Australians have joined the call to protect and preserve the State’s iconic jetties, sending a clear message that these much-loved coastal assets are valued by communities across metropolitan and regional South Australia.

The strong community response follows LGA’s ‘Going Missing’ campaign, which highlighted the growing challenge councils face in maintaining ageing jetty infrastructure and called for a sustainable, long-term funding partnership with the State Government to secure their future.

The community response demonstrates the strength of public support for action and reinforces that South Australians do not want to see these treasured assets disappear due to ageing infrastructure and unsustainable funding arrangements.

Councils have a long history of caring for local jetties, often beyond their financial capacity to keep them open and safe for residents and visitors.

LGA thanks everyone who supported the campaign and shared their stories about what jetties mean to their communities.  The overwhelming response provides further evidence of the importance of developing a long-term solution that protects these assets for future generations.

Next steps

With the campaign concluded, LGA’s advocacy continues.

LGA South Australia has committed funding to develop a long-term advocacy strategy that will build the evidence for long-term investment.

This work will support ongoing discussions with State Government and strengthen the case for a sustainable funding model that recognises jetties as important state-wide community assets.

South Australians have made their message clear, our jetties matter and protecting them requires long-term commitment from all levels of government.
