Creation of digital twin of CWMS in Quorn – Phase 2

Phase 2 of this project was to deliver 'proof of concept' validation of a dynamic digital twin, incorporate IoT sensors, integrate real-time data, and deploy a live dashboard.

These were all five of the agreed key milestones identified in Phase 1 to enable predictive maintenance capabilities.

Who this is for

This project supports SA councils, Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) operators, businesses and regulators.

What's being delivered

  • Proof of concept validation for a dynamic digital twin of the CWMS in Quorn.
  • Incorporation of IoT sensors and integration of real-time data.
  • Deployment of a live dashboard which shows asset conditions, maintenance logging and performance tracking.

About the project

The methodology of this project was based around four key pillars:

  • data gathering
  • model development
  • strategic planning for Phase 2
  • user-centred interface design.

Outcomes

A key outcome of this phase of the project was real-time monitoring preparation. Three priority sensor locations were identified – pump station, lagoon inlet, and lagoon outlet.

A live, web-based dashboard was developed and deployed. This provides real-time system monitoring where council can view asset conditions, maintenance logging and performance tracking.

Other outcomes and achievements include:

  • installation and configuration of IoT sensors
  • integration of three real-time sensor data (water level, electric current, acoustic) within a digital twin
  • development and testing of a novel remote recording and listening mechanism
  • successful confirmation of predictive maintenance capabilities
  • development of risk profile template and a comprehensive risk analysis
  • complete documentation of sensor specifications and implementation guidelines for a future permanent deployment.
